At The OAKS we are extremely proud of all of our cohort, however it’s not every provider that can boast a National gymnast as one of their trainees. Nicole Hazell, a current OAKS trainee teacher of PE and on placement at St. Thomas More in Crewe, is a member of Great British National Team. This month Nicole will be traveling to Portugal to compete as part of the Great British National Team for Teamgym in the European Championships.
Nicole started recreational gymnastics at the age of 4 at Sandbach Gymnastics Club, before moving to Crewe and Nantwich Gymnastics after one year, in order to join their Women’s Artistic Squad, and she has been there ever since. Nicole has competed in women’s artistic gymnastics, tumbling and Teamgym, but now specialises specifically in Teamgym.
Teamgym is not a widely known discipline of gymnastics but in Nicole’s opinion it’s easily the best discipline. It combines the power elements of gymnastics and teamwork. It is a fast paced sport, with lots of crowd support and a friendly atmosphere. Teams consist of up to 10 gymnasts who all perform at the same time to music. Within Teamgym, Nicole is an all-around gymnast. She competes in all 3 apparatus (tumble, trampet & vault and floor). Nicole’s favourite apparatus is tumble.
Nicole has been competing in Teamgym for many years and her current achievements include the impressive:
- British Champion 2017 & 2018
- Southern Champion 2018
- Women’s all around Champion 2018
- 4th at the European Championships 2016
- Highest tumble score in Europe 2016
- Northern Champion 2015 & 2016
- International champion 2014
Nicole will be competing on both Thursday 18th and Saturday 20th October in both qualifications and finals in the hopes of medalling this year.
The competition will be streamed live on YouTube (search Teamgym European Championships 2018 Odivelas) on Wednesday at 3pm and Saturday at 11am. You can also follow the teams progress here.
We’ll all be tuning in and showing our support! Nicole, do us proud!
