"An outstanding secondary teaching training provider" (ofsted 2016)

PE Subject Expert Day @ OSSMA

Last Wednesday, all of our trainees were in their subject specialism groups, kindly hosted by their Subject Experts.  Our PE cohort were at our Stoke-on-Trent lead school, Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy (OSSMA) with Subject Expert, Allie Bryan.   The aim of the day was for all of  the trainees to share their individual expertise, running mini lessons for the rest of the trainees.

Trainee Nicole Hazell, a member of Great British National Team for Teamgym,  expertly ran a gymnastics session that literally ‘stretched and challenged’ the rest of the group.  As you can see below, the group were ‘head over heels’ with the session (sorry!).

Harriett Edwards then put the group through their paces in a trampolining session.  Whilst studying at the University of Birmingham, Harriett was the Head Coach for the trampolining team and used this experience to guide the group and discuss ways that they can effectively support the pupils that they teach in their lessons. The football session was delivered by Staffordshire University’s Female Football Coordinator and semi-professional footballer, Meg Baldwin, who modeled how to enthuse girls into this ever-growing sport.  Meg discussed practical strategies and hints to get the most out of a group and provided the rest of the group with her in depth knowledge of the ‘beautiful game’.

Netball expert, Maisie Blakemore, followed this up with a netball session that had the group looking at drills that would allow for pupils to develop the essential techniques needed to show progress in lessons and promote the enjoyment of this ever popular sport.

Michaela Grisdale, our badminton expert, finished the girls off with a badminton lesson to end the day in style.  Michaela talked the group through methods to engage reluctant learners, with techniques to ensure that all pupils develop their understanding of the key concepts during the lesson.

We’d like to thank Meg and Nicole for the pictures, along with Allie Bryan at OSSMA for her hosting and organising of this action packed day!
